The GPS integration feature in SafecomLink is designed to provide real-time, accurate location data, which is particularly vital for operators involved in emergency communication (EmComm) and mobile activities.
Core Functionality
The GPS feature facilitates location reporting by connecting to external devices:
Device Compatibility: It works seamlessly with typical NMEA GPS devices via a COM port interface.
Automatic Location Update: SafecomLink reads the GPS coordinates and automatically and instantly updates the operator's Grid locator. This ensures the Grid locator remains current and accurate, which is essential when operators are performing activities like outdoor activations or EmComm missions, where they may be "on the go".
Location Sharing: The system includes a tag, which allows users to effortlessly share their exact Longitude/Latitude location. When a GPS location is shared, the tags are clickable, opening Google Maps at that exact spot.
Verbose GPS: During an active Link, enabling the "Verbose GPS" checkbox instructs SafecomLink to send your GPS location every minute.
Configuration and Persistence
Users have control over how GPS data is managed within the application:
Startup Behavior: Operators can configure SafecomLink to remember the last position recorded from the GPS. If the application restarts without a connected GPS, it will retain and display the most recent Grid locator.
Manual Override: If a connected GPS is unavailable, users can manually set a static string of GPS coordinates.
Logging: Users can enable the feature to save GPS readings to a designated file for later logging and analysis with geo applications.
Value in EmComm
The integration of GPS data is noted as a key feature for Emergency Communications. In crisis scenarios, real-time location updates of team members are crucial, aiding in the strategic planning and execution of rescue missions.
